Web site design is the process of designing an appealing and usable website for one's audience. There are many commercial firms that offer web site design services. These services can include visual design and layout, site design and navigation structure, and programming services to build interactivity into the site. Other firms provide web site hosting that offer to host the site on their servers in exchange for a hosting fee. HTML is the most common document format used to build web pages on the Internet. There are software applications such as Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver that make it easier to write the underlying HTML of the web pages by providing a simple document authoring experience.

HTML
HTML. Short for Hyper Text Markup Language, HTML is the authoring language used in the creation of documents for the World Wide Web. HTML uses a variety of tags and attributes to indicate how text should be "marked up." For example, <b>bold</b> indicates that a word should be bold and <i>italics</i> indicates that a word should be written in italics. HTML is also used to indicate where images should appear on a document, and to indicate hypertext links, such as the blue links above.

Web Hosting
Web hosting is a service that provides a physical location in which a web site resides. Customers' websites are stored on computer servers located in secure and climate-controlled environments and permanently connected to the Internet through high-speed data lines. Customers can work on local webpage files and then upload them to the server. As soon as the pages are uploaded to the server, they become live visible to anyone surfing the World Wide Web. Web hosting providers usually charge a monthly fee for hosting services. Some providers host websites free of charge. In these cases, the services are usually paid for by the placement of small ads on the sites being hosted.

Internet Access Options
There are a variety of ways to access the internet. Most private users and businesses access the internet via a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as AOL or EarthLink. Dialup internet is an older technology that allows one to connect to the Internet using a traditional phone line and a computer modem. These connections are relatively slow and offer up to 56Kbs speed. Broadband is a newer technology that allows high speed internet connections from rates of 256KBs to 1.5 MBs and even higher. These connections typically are based on DSL (a technology that uses traditional phone lines) or cable modems (based on the same wires that cable providers use to transmit television signals).

E-mail has been around since the earliest days of the internet. Short for electronic mail, email refers to messages that are sent from one person to another through a computer or computer network. Email can include text, graphics, sounds, and other formats that can be expressed as binary data.

Domain Names
A Domain Name is a friendly name for a server on the Internet. For example, in the URL "http://www.wilsol.net/z_terms.asp" the domain name would be "www.wilsol.net".

DNS
A system called DNS (Domain Name System) is used to resolve friendly domain names to less friendly IP numbers that are used to actually address and route traffic across the internet. The registration of domain names is controlled by a set of domain registrars that are assigned different top-level domains (TLDs). The TLD is the highest level of hierarchy and is the portion of the domain name that appears furthest to the right, Some common TLDs are .COM, .NET, and .ORG. The next part of the domain name is referred to as a second-level domain names (SLD). It is the part that appears just to the left of the TLD.
